JAKARTA, Aug 6 (Reuters) – Indonesian maritime police have intercepted and sealed a ship carrying coal supplied by PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) in waters off East Kalimantan, a police official said on Wednesday.
KPC is a unit of PT Bumi Resources BUMI.JK, Indonesia’s largest coal miner.
Haris Fadly, a sea-patrol police official, said the ship was sealed on Monday due to lack of proper shipping documents.
He said police were still investigating.
“It (the coal) was bought from KPC. This is only about the permit documents (for loading),” said Fadly.
“They need a permit to conduct these (loading) activities.”
Fadly did not say how much coal the ship was carrying but state news agency Antara reported the ship, which it named as Insani, was carrying 40,000 tonnes of coal
KPC officials could not be reached for comment.
KPC produced 38.9 million tonnes of coal in 2007, or about a fifth of Indonesia’s total production.
Indonesia expects to produce 205 million tonnes of coal in 2008, with domestic demand seen at 52 million tonnes and the remainder to be exported, according to energy ministry data.
